A Little Bit About These Wonderful Organisations and Why I Chose them:
The Gift of the Givers
An incredible organisation that helps with disaster relief nationally and internationally. During this pandemic they have provided hundreds of thousands of food packages and medical supplies to countless people in need.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre For Women and Children
This centre is, amongst other things, a 24 hour emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. With so many women and children quarantined with their abusers, it's vital to support such safe places in any way possible. This is the first stop for many women in a long journey of survival.

If you would like to find out more about the policy, funding and practice of various shelters available to women and children fleeing abusive homes in the Western Cape, I found this article fascinating.
It's a little outdated (2012), but it gives great insight into what type of services these shelters provide for women and children as well as the type of funding they receive. It also highlights the shortcomings of the government and shows us how we can best support such amazing organisations.
The Sowetan Animal Rescue Centre
SARAC was founded by Jerry Selwane who, after working for years for the SPCA, saw the need for an animal rescue centre in Soweto. So he used up all of his life savings to start one. He runs an incredible programme where he involves the children of the community, known as his rangers, to be his eyes and ears. He educates them about animals and involves them in their care and rehabilitation. It's a wonderful programme that helps both the children and the animals of Soweto. During this pandemic SARAC have been helping community members struggling with food for their pets by delivering care packages as well as taking in those animals that have been abandoned. Jerry and the team at SARAC do incredible work and rely entirely on donations from the public.
